IELTS Overview

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a widely recognized English proficiency test. It was first introduced in 1980 and has since become one of the most popular English language tests worldwide. The test is designed to assess an individual’s ability to understand and use the English language in academic and general contexts.

Format of IELTS Test

In this test, you have to listen to a sample piece of text that is played to you, and you have to answer 40 questions related to the text. You have 30 minutes to complete the test.

This portion of the test requires you to read 3 passages which are provided to you. Each piece is allowed 20 minutes each.

This test section has two parts:

  • Short portion (150 words): You have to describe the provided task in about 150 words, showcasing your ability to explain it clearly.
  • Long portion (200 words): You provide your opinion on a given situation, demonstrating your proficiency in expressing views and opinions in English.

The speaking test is taken separately and may last for 10 minutes to half an hour, depending on the test conductor. The examiner sees how fluent your English is and if you can or cannot communicate in English with ease.

IELTS Test Format in Detail

The Listening section lasts for 30 minutes and contains a total of 40 items. This section evaluates the test-taker’s ability to understand spoken English in various contexts. The item types include Multiple Choice questions, Matching exercises, and tasks that require labeling plans, maps, or diagrams. Additionally, candidates may be asked to complete forms, narratives, notes, flowcharts, or summaries, and to finish incomplete sentences based on the audio content.

The Reading section spans 60 minutes and also includes 40 questions. It assesses a candidate’s reading comprehension skills through a wide variety of question types. These include Multiple Choice, Matching, and Diagram Labeling questions. Test-takers are also required to complete summaries, ideas, information, or opinions, and to respond to True/False/Yes/No statements. Other tasks involve sentence, summary, note, table, and flowchart completion, as well as classifying information presented in diagrams, charts, graphs, or figures.

The Writing section is allotted 60 minutes and consists of two tasks. Task 1 typically involves the description of visual data such as graphs, tables, charts, or diagrams. In Task 2, candidates are required to write an essay in response to a prompt, where they must present an argument, problem solution, or opinion on a given topic. This section evaluates the test-taker’s ability to organize ideas and communicate effectively in written English.

The Speaking section takes between 11 to 15 minutes and comprises one task, broken into three parts. Part 1 involves an introduction and a personal interview where the candidate answers questions about familiar topics. In Part 2, the test-taker is given a cue card with a topic and is expected to speak about it for 1–2 minutes after a brief preparation period. Part 3 consists of a two-way discussion, which delves deeper into the topic introduced in Part 2, allowing the examiner to assess the candidate’s ability to discuss abstract ideas and issues.
